About the Zoning Ordinance Update

The City of Burleson is updating their Zoning Ordinance, a regulatory document that includes standards for zoning. This update follows the recent adoption of an update to the City’s Comprehensive Plan, Imagine Burleson 2030. That update includes new goals and objectives for the City’s zoning and subdivision and will be a major component of the Ordinance update. The primary goals of the Zoning Ordinance Update, many derived from the updated Comprehensive Plan, are listed below.

Primary Goals

The primary goals of the Zoning Ordinance 2021 project are to:

  • Implement Action 16.b of the Burleson Comprehensive Plan, Imagine Burleson.
  • Build on the public engagement conducted during the Comprehensive Plan update to fully engage citizens and stakeholders.
  • Update the regulations for clarity and enforceability including a simplified organization.
  • Allow for diverse land use options.
  • Encourage social and environmental sustainability including multi-modal transportation and pedestrian-friendly design
  • Support parks and open space conservation.
  • Address stormwater management and related environmental issues.
  • Expand shopping, dining, and entertainment opportunities by developing focus areas throughout the City.
  • Promote a vibrant and viable economic base through a diverse and aesthetically pleasing built environment.

Questions for Discussion

As part of our initial outreach, the project team would like to hear from Burleson residents, business owners,  and any other interested persons regarding the strengths and weaknesses of the current Burleson Zoning Ordinance. We will also be looking for ways the current regulations unnecessarily complicate the administration of land development and redevelopment and how they can be made clearer and more user-friendly. Importantly, this project does not include updates to adopted City plans and policies or the Building Code.
